SUMMARY

Introduction: Short bowel syndrome is the most frequent cause of intestinal failure in children, causing the malabsorption of nutrients and hydroelectrolytic imbalance. In many cases treatment with parenteral nutrition is required, although in the long term this may lead to infectious, metabolic, mechanical and psychosocial complications.

Case presentation: a young girl with short bowel syndrome since birth who is dependent on home parenteral nutrition until she receives a  multivisceral transplant.

Conclusions: Home parenteral nutrition provided the nutrients necessary for the patient’s development and growth until the multivisceral transplant was carried out. It allowed for a reduction in hospitalisation costs and improved the quality of life of both the child and her family. Close clinical monitoring is required due to the complications that may arise, as well as providing the family the appropriate training. Preparing the parenteral nutrition in the hospital Pharmacy Service allowed for considerable savings for the health system.

Key Words: Short bowel syndrome, home parenteral nutritition, pediatric.
