SUMMARY
The objective of the research was to determine the availability and accessibility of essential medicines according to prices and the payment capacity of the population, in pharmaceutical establishments in the public and private sectors in the District of Nuevo Chimbote, province of the Santa of the Department of Ancash in 2014. Direct interviews, income online to the Observatory of prices of the General direction of drugs, drug price data and simulated prescription was used in some cases.
It was determined that the availability of essential medicines at DCI in private establishments was higher than in the MINSA, however their prices averages were 317 times more and prices averages for innovative and generic drug brand or brand chains of drugstores were 4,721 times and 2,399.8 times more respectively than the prices of the MINSA in private establishments what constitutes a barrier to accessibility. With respect to capacity to pay of the population according to the minimum living wage, for treatment of a respiratory infection, requires 8, 4.5 and 1 working days if treatment is made with innovative, generic brand or brand chains of pharmacies drugs or generics in DCI respectively.
