Summary
Schistosomiasis is one of most prevalent parasitic diseases with a high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Its chronicity constitutes a risk factor in the development of bladder cancer. Praziquantel is the drug of choice against urinary schistosomiasis, with a high efficacy of cure in the population.
We describe the case of a patient diagnosed with urinary schistosomiasis, with poor clinical evolution after repeat treatment with praziquantel.
Praziquantel is effective against urinary schistosomiasis in non-endemic areas, although cases of treatment failure have been described. In our case, the patient received up to four cycles of praziquantel treatment. The failure of treatment could be due to a possible resistance to the drug or to the patient having a high parasitic load, thus increasing the possibilities of ovulation and reinfestation, resulting in less effective treatment.
Key words: Praziquantel, schistosomiasis, treatment failure, bladder tumor.
