Challenges in the management of a database for the assisted electronic prescription

SUMMARY

Introduction: The complexity of the drug prescription process requires a powerful computer support that allows not only electronic prescription but also, to improve its efficiency, integrate databases that provide quick information as a system to support the clinical decision.

Objective: To present the challenges and improvements addressed in the organization and management of the medications databases of the electronic prescription system in a hospital environment. 

Method: An observational and retrospective study based on the description of the structural and organizational improvements of the database that supports the electronic prescription, according to the dimensions of activity, safety and efficiency.

Results: 212 files and 47 protocols were created and 428 files and 173 protocols were updated. Safety was improved by incorporating information into 268 hazardous drugs specialties, 47 high-risk drugs and 109 drugs with similar names.

Conclusions: The safety of the patient and the health worker has been enhanced with the incorporation of hazardous drugs, high-risk drugs and those with similar names. The efficiency improvements were the reduction of alerts, the standardization of procedures and the communication between areas of the Service.
