SUMMARY
Occupational exposure to drugs and hazardous products (MPP) with carcinogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic and/or toxic properties for reproduction is a concern of all professionals involved in their preparation and administration.
Although antineoplastic agents constitute the largest group of hazardous drugs (HDs), there are at present other very diverse categories of medications currently in use in our country that affect a wide range of health professions and clinical areas.
In this sense, one of the most common causes of contamination by MPP, is the use of needles and transfer systems of conventional medicines that favor the formation of aerosols, the release of vapors or the drip of the drug in the different phases of the preparation and administration.
For this reason, in order to guarantee the reduction in the level of exposure of the manipulators to the technically lowest possible level, in addition to the use of clean rooms with biological safety cabinets (BSC) and personal protective equipment (PPE), the use of closed systems both in the preparation and administration.
In Spain, as in the rest of Europe, there are no specific regulations regarding closed systems. They are usually considered as medical devices regulated under Royal Decree 1591/2009 and belonging to Class IIa devices. Therefore, it is necessary to advance in the evaluation and recommendations of these devices.
Key Words: Hazardous drug, closed-system drug transfer device, antineoplastic agents, drug preparation, administration, occupational exposure.
