SUMMARY

Objective: To characterize the different types of queries in community pharmacies, in order to have a description of this professional pharmaceutical service as part of Primary Health Care in Costa Rica.

Method: A pilot, descriptive, cross-sectional and multicenter study conducted in 30 community pharmacies. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tests (percentages and proportions), using the statistical program SPSS version 19.

Results: During the study period a total of 26,387 queries were registered, which is equivalent to approximately 880 queries per pharmacy. Overall, 55.13% of pharmacotherapeutic queries, 24.41% of non-pharmacotherapeutic queries and 20.46% of administrative queries.

Conclusion: The pharmaceutical query is part of the portfolio of professional pharmaceutical care services performed at community pharmacies in Costa Rica as part of  primary health care. In the context of the Renewing Primary Health Care policies, this study places private community pharmacies as an accessible health center that responds to a population’s need for health, and of because of the characteristics of the Costa Rican’ health system, the consultations are resolved by a trained professionals.
