SUMMARY
Introduction: Recently, the National Institute for Safety and Hygiene at Work has prepared a technical document on preventive measures for the preparation and administration of hazardous drugs. Among the medicines that must be prepared in the biological safety cabinet are the tablets that must be crushed to be administered in liquid form. One way to avoid its centralized preparation would be the disintegration of the tablet in a syringe.
Objective: To know if the disintegration time of the tablets of hazardous drugs included in the Guide of our hospital is less than 5 minutes.
Material and methods: Each tablet was placed in a syringe with 10 mL of water. It was stirred several times and left to stand for 5 minutes. Later it was again shaken and evaluated if it had disintegrated.
Results: Approximately 50% of the tablets disintegrated in 5 minutes. In some of them there was an important part of the powder in the syringe after emptying it, so it was necessary to reload it with water and shake it so as not to lose part of the medication.
Conclusion: A high percentage of the tablets of hazardous drugs that need to be administered in liquid form can be disintegrated in a syringe and being handled, with the necessary precautions, could be an alternative to the preparation centralized in a Pharmacy.
Key Words: Drugs, hazardous, disintegration, syringe.
