SUMMARY
Objective: The aim of this article is to obtain detailed information related to drugs licensed in Portugal that can be administered intrathecally.
Material and methods: Based on information from the INFARMED (Portuguese National Authority of Medicines and Health Products) database (Infomed), through summary of product characteristics data, it was possible to identify and obtain detailed information related to drugs licensed in Portugal that can be administered intrathecally. The consultation to the database was made in May 2015.
Results and discussion: The drugs found were: baclofen, morphine, bupivacaine, levobupivacaine, ropivacaine, methotrexate, cytarabine, iopamidol and iodixanol. The first five ones depress the central nervous system, achieving analgesia or anesthesia. The methotrexate and cytarabine are antineoplasic and immunomodulating agents. Finally, the latter two drugs, are used as contrast means for diagnostic. Intrathecal administration is useful for delivery of the drug in the cerebrospinal fluid with reduced systemic side effects.
Key Words: INFARMED, intrathecal administration, cerebrospinal fluid, drugs.
