SUMMARY

Objective: To assess the physician (PS) and nursing staff (NS) satisfaction with the electronic prescription (EP).

Method: Observational study, 18 months after EP implementation in 250 hospital beds. 2 specific surveys for PS and NS were designed with 9 and 10 closed questions respectively (8 questions were common for both groups). Satisfaction was assessed from 1 to 5 (very insatisfied to very satisfied). A dichotomous question and 3 open and common questions were also included. Results are presented as percentages and absolute frequencies.

Results: Response rate was 48,2% for PS and 47,1% for NS. The best valued item by PS was “Pharmacy Service collaboration when solving problems/incidents related to EP” (mean score: 4,4 points) and by NS was “clearer patient information” (mean score: 4,1 points). The worst valued item by PS was “EP makes the therapeutic process faster” (mean score: 2,7 points)  and it was also one of the wors valued item by NS as well as “EP improves doctor-pharmacist-nurse coordintation” (mean score: 3,6 points both).

Conclusions: EP is a useful and effective tool by carrying out the drug treatment process. However is still necessary to adapt this tool to the needs of the professionals involved.

Key Words: Client satisfaction, surveys, Hospital Pharmacy Service, electronic prescription.
