Summary
Objective: Evaluation of the efficiency of two automated dispensing cabinets in a ward of Neurology.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, in this study we compared the drug consumption (units) and expenditure (euros) of drugs during six months, in a ward of Neurology, before and after the implementation of two automated dispensing cabinets (ATHOS-Dosys, Algoritmos, Procesos y Diseños S.A. (APD), Madrid, Spain). In 2016, the distribution of medicines in the ward of Neurology was through the distribution of floor stock system and in 2017 the distribution was implemented through the automatic dispensing cabinets linked to computerized physician order entry (C.P.O.E.).
Conclusion: The automated dispensing cabinets are a new technology that enables a higher control of the logistics processes related with medicines, reducing drug consumption. In this study we evaluated the efficiency of two cabinets in a ward of Neurology during 6 months in the periods pre and post-implementation of the cabinets. The difference in drug consumption in units between both periods was 13.644 units (a 25,37% reduction), we also analyzed the drug consumption by subgroups (oral administration, OTC and both characteristics) and the difference in drug consumption in euros between both periods was 4.211,75 euros (a 28,43% reduction), these results are consistent with other bibliography.
Key words: Efficiency, hospitalization, automated dispensing cabinets, drugs dispensing medications.
