SUMMARY
Personal protective equipment is aimed to protect employees from risks threatening their safety. They should be considered as the last barrier or protection resource between the employee and the risk. Because of that, they must be used only when collective protection measures or primary prevention cannot warranty risk minimization for the safety of workers. Such is the case of hazardous drugs manipulation in the health system.
The present paper gathers the minimum safety requirements related to the personal protective equipment use by the sanitary staff when manipulating hazardous drugs, according to Spanish and European legislations. In addition, working health institutions advices are also considered in order to select the proper personal protective equipment, as long as the use instructions, technical and quality specifications required for each one to accomplish the protection of employees manipulating hazardous drugs.
