Summary
Purposes: The infection of chronic wounds is a high prevalence complication that can cause high morbi-mortality. Gram-negative bacteria are frequently associated to those infections. In some situations, the increased emergence of multidrug-resistant and extremely drug-resistant strains and the high capacity of gram-negative bacteria to develop resistance, it makes colistin to be the unique alternative for treatment. The lack of topical antibiotics in our country for the treatment of these infections led to propose the elaboration of a topical cream of colistin to satisfy this situation.
Materials and methods: This is a descriptive study of a series of cases treated with colistin 0.1% cream. The main objective was to describe its efficacy in the eradication of gram-negative bacteria wound infections. Other objectives included its safety assessment and the evaluation of the time to eradication of the infection. The cream was elaborated in a tertiary hospital Pharmacy department according to good manufacturing practice guidelines.
Results: Ten patients with documented chronic wound infection caused by gram-negative bacteria were treated with the colistin 0.1% cream. An 80% eradication rate was observed within a median time to eradication of 3.5 weeks. No patient reported any local or systemic adverse event or hypersensitivity reaction.
Conclusions: Colistin cream seems to be an effective and safe alternative for the treatment of chronic wounds infections caused by gram-negative bacteria.
